‘What Are We Afraid Of? is a photographic research project motivated by a personal interest in the fear associated with the night.

It asks why we fear the nocturnal landscape and how this can be linked to concepts like the Uncanny, and Liminality.
Drawing inspiration from the writing of Sigmund Freud in his essay ‘The Uncanny’, that discusses the uneasy feeling conjured up when the familiar becomes strange or eerie.

Kane explored these ideas through theoretical research, and a photographic investigation into the towns/places he grew up, as they were rendered eerie and unfamiliar by photographing them at night.

Locations across the North of England including: Leeds, Newcastle, Hexham, Corbridge, Blanchland

‘What Are We Afraid Of?’ Has been on exhibition at East Street Arts and Leeds Arts University. Additionally pieces of this work where shortlisted for the British Photography Awards 2024
